Sierra Nevada

Lone Pine Area
Alabama Hills

Alabama Hills are a series of hills, near Lone Pine. They can be easily seen for their rounded contours that contrast against the sharp ridges of the Sierra Nevada. Their existence is due to different patterns of erosion over millions of years.

There are two main types of rock exposed at Alabama Hills. One is an orange, drab weathered metamorphosed volcanic rock that is 150 to 200 million years old. The other type of rock exposed is 90 million year old granite which weathers to potato-shaped large boulders.

The Alabama Hills have been a popular location for television and movie productions. The location is ideal for Westerns, providing a set in a distinctively rugged environment. Approximately 150 movies have been filmed in the area.
